Mike Dirksen Obituary: Springfield, Illinois Arborist and Urban Forestry Leader Remembered
The Springfield, Illinois, community and the arboriculture profession are mourning the loss of Mike Dirksen, a respected arborist, longtime city forester, mentor, and environmental advocate who passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at the age of 67.
Mike dedicated his life to the care, preservation, and advancement of urban forests, earning widespread admiration for his expertise, leadership, and unwavering commitment to tree care. Throughout a career spanning nearly five decades, he became one of the most recognized and respected figures in the arboriculture industry, inspiring generations of arborists through his knowledge, professionalism, and passion for the natural environment.
For 36 years, Mike served the City of Springfield, where he worked as City Arborist and Operations Coordinator. In those roles, he helped shape the city’s urban forestry programs, overseeing the health and maintenance of thousands of public trees while promoting sustainable practices that benefited both residents and the environment. His dedication played a significant role in preserving Springfield’s tree canopy and enhancing the beauty and livability of the community.
Following his retirement from municipal service, Mike remained deeply involved in the profession as an Urban Forestry Consultant and enTREE distributor with BRANDT®. He continued sharing his extensive experience with municipalities, tree care professionals, and organizations across North America, remaining an active advocate for innovation, education, and safety in arboriculture.
Mike was widely known for his exceptional tree-climbing abilities and his commitment to advancing safe climbing techniques. He was an active participant in the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) and the International Tree Climbing Championship (ITCC), where he mentored countless professionals and encouraged excellence within the industry. His willingness to teach, support, and inspire others earned him lasting respect among colleagues and friends.
A graduate of Lincoln Land Community College, Mike earned an associate degree in Landscaping and Groundskeeping with high honors and was recognized in Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges. His academic achievements reflected the same dedication and pursuit of excellence that defined his professional career.
Beyond his many accomplishments, Mike will be remembered for his generosity, humility, and love of nature. Friends and coworkers describe him as someone who was always willing to share his knowledge, lend a helping hand, and encourage those entering the profession. His enthusiasm for trees and environmental stewardship was contagious, leaving a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to work alongside him.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Dirksen, along with a loving family, many close friends, and an extended community of colleagues whose lives he enriched through his mentorship and friendship.
As Springfield and the arboriculture community mourn this tremendous loss, they also celebrate a life devoted to protecting the environment, serving others, and advancing the profession he loved. Mike Dirksen’s legacy will continue to live on through the healthier urban forests he helped cultivate, the countless professionals he mentored, and the lasting example of dedication and service he leaves behind.
