John Cullen Remembered After Fatal Westwood Crash
The Walpole, Massachusetts, community is mourning the loss of John Cullen, a 32-year-old former high school athlete and Nichols College graduate who died following a serious motor vehicle crash in Westwood on Monday, June 29, 2026.
According to authorities, the single-vehicle crash occurred shortly before 4 p.m. along Route 1 near the Budget Inn Motel. Emergency responders from multiple agencies were dispatched after receiving reports of a violent collision involving an SUV that struck a utility pole before crashing into the motel building.
Investigators said the white SUV collided with a telephone pole with enough force to shear it from its base before becoming airborne and striking the upper portion of the motel. The vehicle then fell back to the ground, overturning and sustaining catastrophic damage. The collision also caused significant damage to nearby utility infrastructure, resulting in scattered debris across the area and temporary power outages for surrounding businesses and residents.
First responders worked to free the driver from the wreckage before transporting him to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Despite lifesaving efforts by medical personnel, Cullen later died from injuries sustained in the crash.
The Westwood Police Department continues to investigate the cause of the collision. Officials have not yet announced whether speed, mechanical failure, medical issues, or other contributing factors played a role in the incident.
Witnesses described the crash as both sudden and violent. One bystander recalled seeing the SUV strike the pole before crashing into the motel, while another employee working inside the building said the impact was so powerful it initially felt like an earthquake. The dramatic scene drew a large emergency response as police, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and utility crews secured the area and assessed structural and electrical damage.
Beyond the tragic circumstances of his passing, Cullen is being remembered for the positive impact he made throughout his life. Raised in East Walpole, he graduated from Walpole High School in 2011, where he was a standout member of the school’s football program. Wearing jersey number 36, he contributed as both an offensive lineman and defensive tackle and was part of the school’s memorable undefeated 2008 football season.
Following high school, Cullen attended Nichols College, graduating in 2015. Friends and former teammates remember him as a hardworking, dependable individual who brought determination, loyalty, and camaraderie to every team he joined. His dedication extended beyond athletics into the local community, where he spent several years working at Walpole Country Club and developed lasting friendships with coworkers and residents.
Since news of his passing became public, tributes have poured in across social media from classmates, former coaches, teammates, and community members. Many have shared memories of his kindness, positive attitude, and willingness to help others, describing him as someone who left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
John Cullen is survived by his loving family, extended relatives, and many lifelong friends who now mourn his sudden and heartbreaking loss. Funeral and memorial service arrangements are expected to be announced by his family in the coming days.
