Johnson passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Johnson built a distinguished career in the automotive industry spanning more than four decades. After earning a business degree from the University of Tennessee at Martin in 1981, where he was also a three-year football letterman, he began his professional career selling automobiles in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1983. His talent for sales and leadership soon led him to Southeast Toyota Distributors, where he advanced through several management positions before pursuing his dream of dealership ownership.
In 1999, Johnson relocated to Hickory, North Carolina, and acquired what was then Larry Smith Toyota. Under his leadership, the dealership experienced significant growth, eventually expanding into multiple locations and employing more than 300 people. His focus on customer service, employee development, and long-term relationships helped establish the business as one of the region’s leading automotive organizations.
Beyond his success in business, Johnson earned widespread admiration for his dedication to charitable causes and civic leadership. He believed successful businesses should actively support the communities they serve, a philosophy reflected in his involvement with numerous local organizations and nonprofit initiatives.
