The Timmins community and the Northern Ontario golf world are mourning the loss of Mace Soroko, a respected golf instructor, educator, and mentor who passed away on Monday, June 29, 2026, at the age of 66.
Widely admired for his kindness, patience, and passion for teaching, Soroko spent decades helping golfers of all ages develop their skills while also inspiring students as a supply teacher with the District School Board Ontario North East. His passing has prompted heartfelt tributes from former students, fellow golfers, colleagues, and community members who remember him as someone whose positive attitude touched countless lives.
Throughout his career, Soroko became one of the most recognizable figures in Northern Ontario golf. Working for many years at both Hollinger Golf Club and Spruce Needles Golf Club, he dedicated himself to growing the game by coaching beginners, experienced players, and especially junior golfers. His calm instruction, encouragement, and enthusiasm helped many young athletes improve their abilities while developing confidence both on and off the course.
Golf clubs across the region remembered Soroko not only for his technical knowledge of the game but also for the welcoming atmosphere he created. Whether teaching a new golfer the fundamentals or helping experienced players refine their swing, he approached every lesson with patience, respect, and genuine enthusiasm.
Away from the golf course, Soroko devoted his winters to education as a supply teacher. Students fondly recall his sense of humor, engaging personality, and ability to make learning enjoyable. Many former pupils have shared memories of his jokes, encouragement, and willingness to create a positive classroom environment that made a lasting impression long after the school year ended.
Friends described Soroko as someone who enjoyed bringing people together through sport and conversation. His love of golf extended beyond instruction, as he often spent time discussing tournaments, practicing with friends, and encouraging others to enjoy the game regardless of their skill level. Those who knew him said his greatest gift was making everyone feel welcome.
Soroko is survived by his beloved wife, Réanne, and his son, Jace, along with daughter-in-law Nadia Dagenais. He is also survived by his brother, Bob and his wife Marlene, his extended family, numerous nieces and nephews, and many lifelong friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Steve and Cécile Soroko, his brother John, his sister Cheryl Ellis, and several other close family members.
Family and friends are invited to attend a public visitation on Thursday, July 2, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 2400 Dalton Road in Timmins, Ontario. The gathering will provide an opportunity for the community to celebrate Soroko’s life and remember the countless ways he enriched the lives of those around him.
In keeping with his lifelong commitment to youth development and athletics, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to Sports for Kids – Timmins in lieu of flowers. The organization supports opportunities for young people to participate in sports and recreation, reflecting Soroko’s passion for helping children develop through athletic participation.
Mace Soroko leaves behind a legacy defined by mentorship, generosity, and community service. Whether in the classroom or on the golf course, he dedicated his life to encouraging others to learn, grow, and enjoy every opportunity. His influence will continue to be felt through the many students, golfers, colleagues, and friends whose lives he positively impacted over the years.
